So last night my Digital Audio 4 class checked out the new music center at UCSD. The picture above is the room they equipped with the Meyer Sound Constellation system. It may not look like much, but this was easily one of the coolest field trips I have ever been on.
You can barely tell from the picture, but in that room alone they have 64 speakers, 62 of which are flown, & 24 hanging microphones. The microphones pick up the natural sounds in the room & run them through an array of digital signal processors in real time & then spit that information out of the speakers basically meaning this one room can sound like anywhere you could possibly imagine with the the flick of a finger. The system was already on as we entered the room & about 15 minutes into my instructor’s lecture, he shut it off to show us the juxtaposition. It was the quietest room I’ve ever been in without knowing I was already in it. If that makes any sense.
& then there was free champagne.
